What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

When wisdom teeth are growing into one’s mouth, they may become stuck in bone and tissue if there is not enough room in the mouth for the teeth.  When a wisdom tooth is stuck in bone or tissue, this is called impaction or an impacted wisdom tooth.  A wisdom tooth can be impacted completely in the bone, partially impacted in the bone, or impacted in the gum tissue.  There are also different angles in which a wisdom tooth can be impacted.  For example a wisdom tooth could be impacted horizontally, diagonally, or vertically.  These different features contribute to the complications of leaving the wisdom teeth in place versus extraction.  Impacted wisdom teeth can lie waiting to cause pain at the least possible time.  A wisdom tooth could go years without being infected until it suddenly flairs up causing pain, swelling, and infection.  If a wisdom tooth looks like it could become symptomatic in the future, it is often better to be proactive versus reactive in extracting.  Dr. Joseph Lawson and Dr. Seth Pepper remove wisdom teeth at Peachland Dental in Port Charlotte, Florida.

What is the best way to whiten my teeth?

Have you tried everything to whiten your teeth? Tooth pastes and mouth washes promising a whiter smile? Uncomfortable one size fits all whitening strips? Tooth whitening does not have to be so difficult! At our office in Port Charlotte, we offer our patients a variety of tooth whitening options. One popular option are custom made bleaching trays. The main advantages of bleaching trays are that the trays fit comfortably, whitening gel stays on the teeth and on the teeth only, and whitening results can be controlled by longer use or extended use. Plus, whitening trays can be used time and time again, unlike the disposable whitening strips found at retailers. Please visit our office and ask a Dr. Lawson or Dr. Pepper for more options to whiten your smile!

Dental Implants 101

Dental implants are the ideal solution to replace a missing tooth. Unlike a bridge that relies on grinding down adjacent teeth, a dental implant does not disturb existing teeth or work elsewhere in your mouth. A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone replicating the root of a tooth. Once a dental implant is healed into the bone, a process called osseo-integration which can take weeks to months, a crown is placed onto the dental implant. Placing and restoring dental implants are predictable and routine procedures performed at Peachland Dental in Port Charlotte.
